Day 2 @Raleigh Relays
Joan Bohlke wins the the women's 1500m in a time of 4:24.65, nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field!
Jill Kerr finished within a tight group of 4:35 women, at her NBB debut outdoor race.
Great job!
NBB Day 1 @Raleigh Relays
Andrea Sorgato and Roland Lavallee competed in the 5k yesterday at the Raleigh Relays. Both finished top ten in what seems like a very solid field.
Great job and good luck to the women today!
Dromgoole @Standford
Erin Dromgoole competed in the 5k yesterday at the Stanford Invite. It looked like a tight race with Erin finishing at 16:43.36 and 8, 9, 10 finishers within a second ahead of her and 12, 13 close behind her.
Great job! (btw, remember to stretch before your flight back!)

Fairwell Reggie...
In order to give Reggie a proper sendoff (and also Jeff Boyd who is heading out to California soon), we are doing a Take Two on the Border Kong event.
After Tuesday's practice, we'll head to Border Cafe and the Hong Kong in Harvard Square for food, drinks and to reminisce how nice it was to be away from the elements. Then we can drink to the misery of the first few outdoor practices that will likely be in some kind of raw, windy snow storm!
Let me know if you'll be joining for a reservation head count at Border Cafe :)

Curling!
Ice Dancing? Alpine skiing? Admit it: the real reason you watch the Olympics is for the marquee sport of CURLING! In honor of Vancouver 2010, I'm proposing an NBB outing to Broomstones, the curling club in nearby Wayland. Normally the club is closed to the public, so their Olympic Open House on March 7th is our chance!
The details:
- $10 each (so affordable!)
- 1.5 hours, give or take
- group slots available every 20 minutes between 1pm & 4:40pm
More info: http://broomstones.com/

p.s. As the photo above proves, there is definite potential for a costume contest here.
National Pancake Day 2/23
Per tradition, we'll make our way to the Brighton IHOP after our workout and feast on a free shortstack of pancakes (and make a small donation to support local children's hospitals).
In past years, there have been discussions of a pancake relay race. Is it going to happen this year? Can we recruit Karina to lead us in this? Can we please get a video camera to record this?

Attn Marathoners: American Cancer Society charity opportunity
Training for a marathon, triathlon, cycling race, or other endurance event is a huge commitment. Make it mean more by joining the American Cancer Society DetermiNation endurance event program. ACS will provide the support and training to help you achieve your personal victory. And you’ll have the extra strength you need to endure miles and months of training because you’ll know you’re helping save lives. With every step you take and every mile you conquer, you’ll be helping create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
Several races across New England have become part of the DetermiNation endurance event program, allowing athletes to turn their participation into a chance to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Athletes who choose to join the DetermiNation program commit to a fundraising minimum (much lower than other charities), and in return, enjoy many benefits that DetermiNation has to offer: training tips from experts, an exclusive DetermiNation racing shirt, a personal Web site, race-day amentities, and the knowledge that they are helping to save lives.
Here are some of the upcoming events:
Sunday, February 28 - Hyannis Marathon, Half Marathon 7 10K
Monday, April 19 - Boston Marathon (qualified runners only)
Sunday, May 2 - Cox Sports Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K
Sunday May 30 - Boston’s Run to Remember (Half Marathon & 5 Miler)
Sunday, May 30 -Key Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay

Women's Indoor 1000m American Record still stand
Anna (Willard) Pierce and Erin Donohue made no real attempts to follow the pace rabbit, who ran 600m at the perfect American record breaking pace. Oh so sad, as we cheered to make sure that our own team member's record still stands.
The best race of the evening took place with the men's 5000m. Bernard Lagat ran a great race to break Galen Rupp's previous indoor American record by 7 seconds, finishing in 13:11. After the pace rabbits stepped off at an AR pace, Lagat led much of the middle mile, where the pace slowed slightly to make for an exciting negative last mile split where Rupp attempted to take the lead with 1000m to go. Lagat made it seemily easy by changing gears in the final laps and blasting away a great last 200m to win. Congrats to the new American record holder.
In unrelated track news but relevant to the NBBrs night out. The DJ at An Tua Nua's destroyed a perfectly good party by playing some rather lame music during the last 45 minutes of the evening. I consider him to dead to me while I still try to send an evil stare his way, wherever he is now.

As tradition, NBB spectators will celebrate post-BIG. I'd like to get reservations in. If you can RSVP, it'll help with the headcount. We're thinking Game On or Boston Beerworks in Fenway. Alternative suggestions are welcome.
Even if you're not watching the meet, you're welcome to join us afterwards. The last event is at 8p, so we'll aim to meet at 9:15p.

Marathoners: NB Research Lab opportunity
They are looking at the mechanics and needs of high level marathon runners. More specifically they are looking for runners who finish the marathon in approximately 3hrs or faster.
Testing should take about 2hrs and participants would be compensated with a pair of shoes.

Dear RLTAC
Dear RLTAC,
I've been a user of the Reggie Lewis Track center since my high school days (15+ years). The facility has been an amazing addition to the community and to the city. It's provided indoor track usage for the high schoolers, local colleges and post-collegiate athletes, as well as development activities for the youth of the city.
I feel that the website should be greatly improved to give the Track its due recognition for being a world class facility. The appearance and contents should be redesigned. Up-to-date information is key to keep fans and users of RLTAC aware of events, schedule updates, cancellations/closings, community opportunities, etc.
The New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in NY had struggled with this and has since upgraded their website. Although there can still be improvement, it provides a goal for RLTAC to achieve and possibly surpass.
I hope my comments will be taken in earnest as I continue to support the growth of RLTAC.
Regards,
Yvonne Green

Maria Martin Carrara
"I don't feel pressure, I apply it. From the front, the entire race."
NB Research Lab
The NB Sports Research Lab is currently conducting a study and are looking for participants. Some of you already know Pedro as the weartest rep.
The study is looking at how ankle flexibility affects the mechanics of the entire lower extremity and how this may contribute to overuse injuries such as anterior knee pain or "knee cap" pain.
To study this relationship they are looking for runners who:
1. avg 8+ miles per wk for the last 6 months
2. heel strikers
3. healthy or have anterior/knee cap pain when running
If interested please contact Pedro Rodrigues MS PT at pedro.rodrigues@newbalance.com.

XC Denouement
Most of the NBB team arrived Thursday evening and the remainder on Friday.
We previewed the course yesterday and found a good and challenging cross country course. The first half mile is on a bumpy uphill grass field. The rest of the course is a roller coaster of winding loops. The course is wide open with little wind coverage but good for keeping an eye on the competition. The multiple loop (two for women, three for men) will provide for good spectating of the battles to take place.
At race time the weather will be 40*F, partly sunny and winds at 7mph from the SE.
The women's 6k 12:45p start and men's 10k 1:30p start will be full of anticipation.
The women have their goals set high. There are three to five teams that come between what NBB women have wanted for four years. The win.
This is the third year that the NBB men have a scoring team. With every team, the men look to show their continued improvement. The chase for spots is on.

Place Your Bets!
- Will "Peanut" Carrara be a future member of the men's or women's team?
- Will Peanut false start or will everyone be waiting around on the starting line while he/she does a few more strides? (In other words, what day will Peanut join us? Due date is December 19, I believe!)
- Will Peanut qualify for the Clydesdale division? Or will he/she need to head for seconds in the post-race buffet? (Weight?)
- Will Peanut be a high jumper or will he/she trip over the steeple barriers? (How tall?)
Stay tuned for more Peanut updates in the coming weeks!

Club XC Nationals
Our season will cap off with a great team event and some good old fashioned bonding during post-race fun. My version includes a pint of ice cream, a half case of beer and *maybe* dancing. Laura may get us some free pasta, hopefully there won't be any code 803s and no one with frostbite. By the way, what happens at Club Nats stays at Club Nats.
We are beginning to work out our travel plans. I've advanced booked 8 two-bed rooms at a hotel just one mile from the Convention Center. The hotel happens to have an onsite Waffle House. I'll set my alarm to make sure we get there by 3am.
As for flight plans, the options are to leave Thursday day, Thursday night (after work) or Friday day:
Cincinnatti [CVG]
- non-stop available
- $50 cheaper
- total flight time: 2.5 hours
- 90 minute drive to Lexington
Lexington [LEX]
- minimum 1-stop
- price closer to $300
- total flight time w/ connection: ~4-7 hours
- 15 minute drive to hotel
Flying back to BOS, it's best to get an afternoon to early evening flight.
I have some flight numbers and itineraries ready. I can book for up to 6 people. So if I have 5 other people committed, I can book a group and rent our van.
My inclinations are to fly from BOS into CVG, Thursday 5p (Delta 1131). And fly out Sunday 5p (Delta 5964). The prices have already inched up $10.
Post here for your feedback.

Battle of the New England clubs
This Sunday is the 2009 USATF New England Cross Country Championships.
Both the men and women are vying for wins against fellow club teams BAA, GBTC and others. The biggest contender against NBB for the title is BAA.
Both NBB men and women were able to hold off BAA at Mayor's Cup with very close results. The competition will be fierce and we'll be ready.

Ready to wring the beach out of this relay
This past week has been full of preparations, communications and excitement.
The two Justins are bringing their "furry, cuddly" nature. Ryan is confident in his runner status as being "committed, and popular . . . and very handsome to boot." Newcomers to RTB, Mark, Chris, and Nicole, are in for an adventure. Lara and Christine are itching to show the Kittys that they've got catnip and are not afraid to use it. Laura and Liz plan to double team the Kittys' "female" runners. Tom and I bring our experience and wise ways... of having a killer time.

Season Opener Fun
Although the rain kept everyone out of the pool, plenty of fun was still had. Football on the tv provided entertainment, and foosball and ping pong games provided us with fierce competition. Next year, we'll be sure to provide official rules to all participants. (Goalies do not score two points in foosball).
If you have photos from the event, please feel free to post them on our team photo website. An album has already been created for the event.

Update! Run Pool to Fresh Pond
For those driving, you need to arrive early enough to park, warmup, stretch, "etc" - that's why we have a meet time of 9a. Also, note that the parking lots at Fresh Pond are for Cambridge Residents Only. There is parking across Fresh Pond Parkway, in local business parking lots (choose wisely).
There is a group warming up to Fresh Pond from Watertown. The local Watertown-ites (myself, Jeff C, Karina, Archard) are run pooling there. I'll pick up Archard, then JC and Karina along the way. Contact me if you'd like to join.
Also, don't forget to RSVP to the NBB Season Opener cookout that's occurring at 2p on Saturday! If you didn't get an evite, you're not invited. Just Kidding! Please let us know. The system was quirky and some invitations were lost.
See you then!

Wanted: Women
For any NBB women or any prospective women looking to join NBB, this is a great way to get to know NBB in a way you never thought possible (ooh-la-la).
All kidding aside, this is a great running event that consists of a 200 mile road relay over 24 hours, run by 12 people (6 men, 6 women) doing 36 different legs, where each person runs 3 tempo legs totaling an average of 16 miles. Starting in the White Mountains of NH, we make our way in 2 vans of 6 people to Hampton Beach, where we strip and jump into the ocean (ok, only some people strip. Alright, fine, only I do).
New Balance (the race sponsor) is providing a FREE race entry (over $1000) and each member gets a spiffy NB tech jacket and a pair of NB trainers. They are also organizing our hotel stay, van rentals, and pre-race dinner and breakfast (which we're responsible for paying but is a small fee compared to what is provided us).
Please let me know if you're interested (contact via the nbboston.com Contact Us page).
P.S. Sorry men, we've already got a full roster of you. Maybe next year.

This weekend at Icahn Stadium, Justin Lutz will compete in the men's 1500m at USATF Outdoor Club National Championships. Good luck!
The NBB Reach the Beach relay team is almost complete. After our twelfth runner is found and has signed up, we'll announce the roster here. We look forward to the fun of defending our title with a co-ed team.
The NBBoston.com website is currently unavailable and under construction as we make updates. Please be patient as we work on this.

Rain and Wind for USATF NEs
The race was held on a gray, misty day where winds from the Charles were a difficult challenge on the finish straight of the track.
Even still, hard efforts were laid down. Laura Kennedy ran a strong start in the 5km, fighting the conditions by the end. Cailtin Malloy ran a 2:17.08 in the women's 800m, with a possible infection of the "dreaded" H1N1 (swine) flu. Yvonne Green and Jen Hegarty competed in the 1500m.
On the men's side, the 800m race had Tim Kaijala, Philip Mainwaring and Chris McCann, finishing 2nd, 4th and 5th respectively. Roland Lavallee, Jeff Paterno, Ari Zamir and Tony Orth competed in the 1500m. The exciting race of the day was the men's 3k Steeplchase where Ryan Carrara came out of a long time steeple retirement to rabbit Justin Lutz. No injuries were incurred and Justin won the event.
Despite the weather, the team support was strong and much appreciated.

Here's the recap.
Catherine Regan started the meet with an amazing, gutsy race in the women's 800m. Her hard efforts gave her a time of 2:10.10, clipping on the heels of Jennifer Metz. The men's and women's 400m were blazing with winning times of 47.38 and 57.34, respectively.
The women's 1500m seeded heat was filled with talent as New Balance Boston's Rebecca Donaghue ran a smart and fast race, winning in a sub-USATF 'A' Qualifying time of 4:13.78. Maureen McCandless (Team NB) and Delilah DiCrescenzo also ran under the qualifying standard.
The men's 800m had three men who finished under the USATF Qualifying Standard, with the winner at 1:46.47, nearly a full two seconds under the standard.
The large men's 5000m field had great performances, with Roland Lavallee make a hard run at the win, coming in second and a great 8 second PR, finishing in 14:15.51.
Laura Kennedy paced the women's 5000m race, where Molly Huddle ran a comfortable and strong win in a time of 15:53.91, coming in under the USATF 'B' Standard.
Tim Kaijala (NBB) and Gered Burns came back from their 800m races to help pace four men under the 1500m USATF Standard of 3:45.00. NBB's Dave Juliano finished second for an amazing 3:43.18.
The final event of the night showed the crowd a world class performance and two women achieving the USATF Standard for the women's 3000m steeplechase. DiCrescenzo came back from her 1500m race to pace Japanese, Jamaican and Kenyan athletes. Shauneen Garrahan also returned from her 1500m race to set the pace for the US athletes. Under the twilight night, Minori Kayakari won the race in 9:55.27, and Kristen Anderson and Jenn Donovan (NBB) fought the clock to acquire the USATF 'A' Qualifying Standard.
Congratulations to all the athletes. Thank you all the volunteers, New Balance, New Balance Boston, family, friends, and supporters.
See you next year at the next New Balance Boston Twilight Series!

National Running Day
It will be a relaxed run, especially for you guys, probably in the 3-5 mile range. Would love to have anyone who's available there to answer questions about running, NBB, or whatever else people might be interested in. No need to make special trips in but if there are people who are local and would be interested in joining for a fun group recovery day, please let me know.
thanks!
Dan

Post Twilight Meet Dinner
As in years past, we gather for dinner after the meets.
We usually don't decide where until the meet has ended but I'm trying to provide a bit more organization. Ideally we stay local to Waltham - it's close to the track for quick access to food for hungry athletes and volunteers; parking is less difficult than going into the city; it is centrally located for those that do not live in the city.
Do people have suggestions? We've done John Brewers, Bertucci's (near the 128 rotary overpass), Watch City Brewery, Bison County BBQ & Brill. Margaritas tends to have a long wait. There's Pub 99 over by Brandeis, local bar/pubs: Skellig, Joe Sent Me, new places: Tacqueria Mexco (tiny place with low taco/burrito prices), Jake's Dixie Roadhouse, etc.
Please vote in the poll to the right.
