Franklin Park renovations

The Globe reported renovations to Franklin Park are planned, including the cross country course.

I wonder what the course needs and hope changes to the essence of the course are not made.

It's time to play......Guess this NBBer!

SHARE YOUR GUESS USING THE COMMENT LINK BELOW!

In a shamelessly undisguised attempt to revive the NBB Blog, it's time to institute a new game: Guess this NBBer! Depending on how many photos we can collect, it's bound to be an irregular and irreverent game. Not to mention highly embarrassing.

So.....can you name the finely dressed young man pictured here? Prizes will not be awarded, but who are you kidding - NBB is about competing and having fun, and this game is decidedly right up that alley. The catch is that in order to keep the game going, you have to submit a childhood photo of your own. (Anonymous emails from fake accounts will be accepted from those too embarrassed to own their fashion "don'ts".)

Bonus points for middle school photos and anything involving braces, a mullet or shoulder pads!

Best of luck..... (Click "Comments" to guess!)

NB Boston Top Performances and Personal Bests at 1st Twilight Meet

The New Balance Boston Twilight Series proved to be very successful with a great turnout and great performances overall.  While the meet itself was highlighted by the podium finishers in the 1500 and 800 (Featured Event), there were some specific performances by NB Boston members that should also be noted.

Top NBB Performances from TM 1

Caitlin Malloy - Doubling with a 4:37.38 in the 1500, followed by a 2:18.09 in the 800
Ali Chase - 2:14.25 in the 800 which we believe is an outdoor PR
Laura Kennedy - Set a new PR in the 1500 with a 4:39.15
Erin Archard - Just missed her season best from Brown, staying consistent in the 1500 with a 4:39.94
Diana Davis - Strong race finishing 4th in the 5K and with a big PR of 17:17.10
Joanna Murphy - Running her first outdoor race for NBB, set a new PR of 17:52.82 in the 5K

Steve Stewart - Mixing it up in the Featured Event and running a new PR in the 800 of 1:55.86
Paul Rupprecht - Just missing his PR in the 1500, but fastest time in a few years with 3:51.43
Andrea Sorgato - On the eve of his 30th Birthday, moved down in distance to run with the "young guys" and hung in there running 3:52.72
Colin Lyons - Just missed his PR in the 800 with a strong 1:57.06 to win the 2nd section
Brendan Collins - Battling with Lyons in the 800, made it a close finish to run 1:57.35
Keith Drake - Fresh on the roster with NB gear just out of the box, runs a 15:07.80 as a nice opener

Congratulations to everyone that competed and get ready for more action next week at NBB Twilight #2 as we head up to the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.

Sneak peak

New Balance Boston will be sporting some new colors soon. While the current blue kit has become quite recognizable around the New England running scene, it's time to give the competition something new to focus on. The new kit may see some limited action beforehand, but expect to see the new colors rolled out proudly for the first of the NB Boston Twilight meets on May 14th.

Davis's Famed Runners' Cookies

The Runners' Cookies were a huge hit at the gathering hosted by Diana Davis during the Brown Invitational. The weather was cold and windy but Davis's own cookie recipe was warm and inviting.

Here is the recipe:

Runner Cookies

This recipe copyright 2002, 2004 by Diana Davis

Ingredients:
(a)
2 cups unsweetened applesauce
2+1/2 cups packed brown sugar
4 egg whites
2 tsp. vanilla
(b)
2+1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
*1/4 cup ground flax seed
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnoman
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
6 cups old-fashioned oats

(c)
2 cups raisins
2 cups chocolate chips

* Purchase flax seeds in the bulk natural foods section of the grocery store and grind them in a coffee-bean grinder.
If you put in whole unground flax seeds, they will pass through your system undigested, without conferring their health benefits upon you.
If you don't have wheat germ or flax seed, use 3 cups of flour instead of 2-1/2.
Directions:
Blend (a) in mixer.

Combine (b) in separate bowl and then add to mixer.

Add (c) to mixer or stir in by hand.

Alternative Directions: Turn the mixer on and dump everything in. That works, too.

Shape dough into patties on baking sheet. (They will not spread, so if you put little spheres in the oven, you'll get spherical little cookies.) Bake for 12-15 minutes at 375°. Makes 72 cookies. Note: I always make a double batch, so the quantities above are for a double batch.
You can also take a half batch of the above dough, press it into a 9 x 13 pan, and bake it for 25 minutes. If you cut it into 24 "granola bars," multiply each of the nutrition facts below by 1.5.
