Curling!

Ice Dancing? Alpine skiing? Admit it: the real reason you watch the Olympics is for the marquee sport of CURLING! In honor of Vancouver 2010, I'm proposing an NBB outing to Broomstones, the curling club in nearby Wayland. Normally the club is closed to the public, so their Olympic Open House on March 7th is our chance!

The details:
- $10 each (so affordable!)
- 1.5 hours, give or take
- group slots available every 20 minutes between 1pm & 4:40pm

More info: http://broomstones.com/

Who's in?!?

p.s. As the photo above proves, there is definite potential for a costume contest here.

  1. I so want in! But I'll be on a plane back from the Bahamas. Are there any other possible days? I know that NB has rented time for a company outting. Dan wants to show off his curling skills.

  2. If I can find pants like that - I am SOOO there!! Is curling anything like shuffleboard? I grew up playing shuffleboard at the boardward on LI beaches .. im not 1/2 bad .. or maybe i'm not 1/2 good either hahha

  3. it's "marquee" unless you're implying curling is a sport for noblemen.

  4. I am in! I will begin looking for the proper pair of pants now. With those pants it must be both marquis and marquee.

  5. Slots are filling up fast -- there were 40+ openings in each time slot yesterday, now several slots are down to the single digits!

I say we aim for 3:20, which still has 30 spots available. (Broomstones suggested 1-2pm for "family groups." Knowing Phil Mainwaring's beard might be in attendance, I thought we would try not to scare the children.)

If you're interested, post here and I will sign us all up! $10/person.

  7. I'm bummed I won't be around that day! I went with a crew from NB around the holidays and the broomstones staff just assumed I'd be in Vancouver with skills like mine.

With pants like those above, what's not to love about this sport?

Just make sure you don't put too much weight on the shoe with the teflon coating on it while standing on the ice.

  9. So is this a team competition? Who's going to be my partner in crime? Dromgoole?? We should put some money on the table for the winning team - or maybe loser treats for dinner/drinks after .. haha .. Anyhow, I need to start searching for those amazing pants ;p

  11. It's four people to a team.

I can't believe I can't go. I have the perfect bright purple pants for my uniform.

  12. Erin, I can't believe they actually have a training program for curling! It looks pretty intense (ie, Level 1/Week 1= Run 1.5min, walk 3.5 min x 5)

Yikes, cut me a little slack, girlfriend!! Who do you think I am? A distance runner?? hahhaha ;p

  13. Total slam on my beard out of nowhere, Erin. I and my facial hair will be in attendance to school you in the fine art of precision ice-sweeping.

I would welcome the attendance of any other mid-distance jv squad members, so we can stick it to the man. The man, of course, being the people on the team with superior aerobic development.

  14. I'll be around so if it's not too late, I'd like to partake in the icy festivities and show off my skills! ...or at least my competitive nature!

  15. Sorry guys, all of the spots are filled!

Donovan & I ("Team Superior Aerobic Development" -- thanks, Phil) will be teaming up against the Hockings ("Team How Far Do you Drive to Get To Practice?") and Kevin C./Paul Schmidt ("Team Let's Go See a German Movie After This is Over".) Though citizenship issues may derail the latter's bid, a good time is expected by all!

Any other team name suggestions are welcome....

  16. Are spectators allowed? If so, there needs to be a film crew for this. I want this epic event to be plastered all over the team website. The photos may become the new team photo banner.
